Shown here is a Gibson ES Les Paul in Light Burst finish, dated to July of 2014 at Memphis TN. The serial number indicates July 3 2014, while the QC inspection card points to July 12th 2015 as its final check before shipping.
The full model number or SKU for this instrument is 'ESLP14LBNH1' which expands to "Electric Spanish Les Paul 2014 Light Burst Nickel Hardware Right Handed".
This lovely guitar is sold with its original brown Gibson Custom hard shell case containing the Certificate of Authenticity and QC check card.
Condition and Construction
This Gibson ES Les Paul example is in very good, clean condition with only minor play wear.
Using the outline and dimensions of a standard Les Paul, the arched top is figured Maple laminate, while the sides and back are flat Maple laminate. There is a Mahogany center block for structural support and feedback resistance. Most but not all examples have F-holes. The neck is Mahogany with a bound Indian Rosewood fingerboard with rolled edges for added comfort.
Hardware and Electronics
Gibson ES Les Paul hardware largely matches standard Les Paul components. The head carries a set of Gibson Deluxe tuners with keystone buttons. The body has a standard Tune-o-Matic bridge and stop tailpiece set, which mount into the solid center block.
The earliest ES Les Paul models used BurstBucker pairs, but these were quickly replaced with MHS (Memphis Historic Spec) Alnico II humbuckers. Standard Les Paul wiring follows - individual volume and tone controls, three way switch, and output jack on the side. The metal parts have Nickel plating.
Finish
As usual, the Gibson ES Les Paul has a nitrocellulose lacquer finish and in this case a 'Light Burst' colour scheme on the top. The sides, back and neck have a Walnut brown stain.
Special Features
The fingerboard also has a feature very unusual for Gibson: the frets go all the way to the edge of the binding! This distinctive difference, provides a full-width playing surface and is limited to specific guitars in the Memphis production though it is common on many other brands.
In Gibson's traditional construction method, the fingerboard is prepared, inlaid and fretted off the neck. The fret ends are dressed flush to the vertical edges of the fingerboard. The binding is then added and trimmed to follow the top edge of the fingerboard AND fret ends, leaving the characteristic 'nubs'.
Model History
During 2013 the Gibson Memphis plant decided to address one of the persistent complaints about the Les Paul - its weight. Chambering and weight relief had been used for some years with moderate success, but Memphis opted for a more comprehensive redesign.
This led to the ES-Les Paul, a 'thinline' semi-hollow adaptation much like the venerable ES-335. The first models appeared in 2014. Three versions of the ES Les Paul were built, the Studio, Standard and Custom. In 2018, the upcoming closure of the Memphis plant was announced and production wound down, finally ending with plant closure in 2019. This was the end of the ES Les Paul; its production was not shifted to Nashville.
