This Gibson ES-347S Ebony dates to June 7 1987 and was built in Nashville, TN. It is in overall good and original condition for its age, with expected lacquer checking and finish wear. There are two finish chips on the back of the neck, and the guitar plays well and cleanly with light to moderate fret wear.
The original hard shell case is included.
Introduced in 1978 to 1985 then from 1987 to 1993, the Gibson ES-347 replaced the ES-345, added a coil split switch, and blended features from the ES-355, notably the Ebony fingerboard, Mother of Pearl block position markers, bound headstock and TP-6 fine tuning tailpiece.
The ES-347 model was aimed at working professional musicians who played in multiple genres, and its versatility was a major promotion point.
The ES-347 was built in two versions, the ES-347TD to 1985 and the ES-347 S, the S version appearing in 1987. In Gibson terms, the 'T' translates to 'Thinline' and the 'D' for 'Double Pickup', while the 'S' apparently translates to 'Special Order'. Structurally, the two versions are the same and the 'Special Order' often referred to the finish. The 'TD' models often had the coil split switch on the lower cutaway, while the 'S' version placed it near the pickup selector. The label on this 1987 example identifies the guitar as an ES-347 S, the labels on some later versions omit the S.
Based on the ES-335 concept, the Gibson ES-347 uses a laminate Maple body with a Maple or 'Chromite' center block, a three-piece Maple neck with bound Ebony fingerboard and block position markers. Like the ES-355, the headstock is also bound. The tuners are Grover Roto-Matics with metal keystone style buttons. All of the hardware is gold plated.
For pickups, to the mid 1980's, high output Series VII 'Dirty Fingers' ceramic-magnet humbuckers were installed, though towards the end of this period standard humbuckers were installed. For the reintroduction, 490/498 or '57 Classic humbuckers were used. It's worth noting that any of the pickups intended for use with the coil split switch had to have four leads, not Gibson's traditional pickup wire with the braided metal sheath.
