The Gibson ES-125T Thinline artchtop debuted in 1956 as an entry level electric archtop, with one P-90 pickup in the neck position, and was built until 1968. It was the thin body (T) version of the popular ES-125 built since 1941.
Using the same body shape as the the ES-125, the ES-125T had a thinner body, no cutaway and a single P-90 pickup in the neck position with volume and tone controls. The cutaway versions (ES-125TC for Thinline Cutaway, or TDC for Thinline Double pickup Cutaway) started to appear in 1960 and quickly outsold the older version. All were built with Maple laminate for the top, back and sides, Honduran Mahogany for the body blocks and neck, and until about 1965 Brazilian Rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge. The last production years used Indian Rosewood. A simple trapeze tailpiece and 3-per side Kluson strip tuners rounded out the hardware.
This remarkable example was built during 1958 in Kalamazoo, Michigan and is in very good, all original condition. Aside from natural lacquer sinking and light oxidization, it looks almost new. There is virtually no lacquer checking, a natural reaction of lacquer finishes to temperature changes, and wear is very minor. Some time ago, the top of the back of the head gained a small chip, which was quickly reglued.
This is a great guitar to play. It sounds extremely good acoustically and electrically; the ES-125T models from this period are very loud acoustically and the P-90 has a wonderfully warm output, outstanding for blues and jazz styles. The neck profile is a bit full but not chubby or fat.
Sold with a non-original hard shell case. As entry level guitars, these often shipped with faux-gator fibre (cardboard) cases, many of which have not survived.
