Built at Gibson Memphis during 2001, this Gibson CS-356 features a nitrocellulose lacquer Vintage Sunburst, gold hardware, a nicely flamed Maple top on a chambered Mahogany body and a Mahogany neck with Richlite fingerboard. And it has a stock Bigsby B7G!
Condition
This 2001 Gibson CS-356 is in very good, clean condition with very light wear. Most of the visible wear is lightly tarnished gold plating on the Bigsby and pickup covers.
Visually this instrument is as classy as it is comfortable to play and delivers a full, rich sound – certainly much bigger than it looks!
The original black Made in Canada case is included and contains the Certificate of Authenticity.
History, Design and Construction
In 1996, Gibson introduced the ES-336, essentially a smaller version of the ES-335. These were made on the general design of the classic ES-335 models but are scaled down in body size though not in scale length. Rather than the 16 inch width of the 335 body, these are 14.25 inches wide. As with the ES-335, the bodies are Maple laminate with a solid center block.
Ultimately, Gibson produced a number of variations on the concept including the current ES-339. The Memphis plant offered two more elaborate but distinctly different versions. The ES-359, built 2008 to 2017, uses the traditional Maple Laminate and center block construction but adds higher grade appointments such multi-layer top binding, bound headstock, an Ebony or Richlite fingerboard, Mother of Pearl block position markers and split-diamond headstock inlay. The pickguard is a bound translucent faux-tortoise.
The Gibson CS-356 was built from 2001 to 2017 and is visually similar to the ES-359 but has significant differences: the CS-356 has a carved solid Maple top on a back, sides, and center block that are carved from a single block of Mahogany -- essentially a chambered construction.
Hardware and Electronics
Gold-plated hardware starts with a set of Gibson Deluxe tuners with plastic keystone buttons. At the other end, a no-wire Gibson ABR bridge rests on vintage-style threaded posts. This example has a factory-optional Bigsby B7G; many others shipped with a standard stop tailpiece.
Electronics include 57 Classic humbuckers, a three-way pickup selector and individual volume and tone controls. In a distinct change from the ES-335 layout, the output jack is mounted on the side, rather than on the top.
These changes make for a smaller guitar, slightly larger than a Les Paul, with the rich tonality and resonance of the 335 line and in the case of the CS-356, the possibility of spectacularly figured tops. The solid-wood CS-356 construction is often regarded as delivering a richer, fuller tone than the other laminate/center block models.
