Description
Presented here is a pristine Gibson Brian Ray '62 SG Junior White Fox from 2020. The COA booklet and optional bridge are included.
The White Fox Finish
While it presents as a striking, clean white from a distance, the "White Fox" finish is a deeply layered, three-dimensional Custom Shop creation. Gibson achieves this look by working a dark grain filler directly into the open pores of the mahogany body and neck. An opaque white base coat is applied, followed by a shifting, translucent pearlescent color coat. This is sealed under a smooth clear gloss nitrocellulose lacquer and all of this is left to cure for weeks. The result is an eye-catching, pearly glow that beautifully highlights the natural organic architecture of the underlying wood grain.
Materials and Construction
The Brian Ray '62 SG Junior looks very much like a stock Junior, but several subtle or even invisible features make it work very well in performance situations. As with other Juniors and Specials, the body and neck are Mahogany, and the fingerboard Indian Rosewood. The headstock veneer is dyed Pear, with a Mother of Pearl Gibson logo. As an added decoration, there is an Indian Rosewood block with Mother of Pearl inlay resting against the rear edge of the Vibrola tailpiece.
However, the body is thicker than standard, providing more low midrange and sustain, and the neck has a long tenon for stability. Hide glue is used for the neck joint. The fingerboard inlays also differ slightly, with a crown at the octave fret along with standard trapezoidal markers instead of dots. Dunlop 6100 fretwire was chosen, which gives a lot of grip and traction for bending. The increased mass of these frets also slightly improves sustain, clarity and note-to-note separation.
Additionally, the neck joint is at a slightly steeper angle, close to 4 degrees. This puts the bridge higher, dramatically improving downbearing on the saddles when strung with the vibrola while still allowing low action height.
The electronics have a highly meaningful feature: a passive coil is located under the pickguard and, when selected via the push-push tone control, cancels the expected single coil P-90 susceptibility to hum and interference.
Finally there's an adaptable feature - during a string change, you can choose to either string with the Vibrola trem and Tune-o-matic bridge, or install the included wraparound bridge using the conversion posts.
Here's what the builder has to say about the Gibson Brian Ray '62 SG Junior:
"The Brian Ray ’62 SG Junior builds on the popularity of Brian’s ‘63 SG Standard model with exciting design elements, versatile features and analog innovations. It has become Brian’s guitar of choice on recent tours with Sir Paul McCartney, playing on the world’s biggest stages.
And because of the variety of stage conditions, Brian wanted to make sure this SG Junior offered a lot more than meets the eye. A passive “induction coil” circuit, engaged with a tap of the push-push knob, hides under the pickguard to reduce RF interference and high-gain noise while preserving the tone of the powerful P-90 pickup.
The clever convertible bridge design gives players the choice between a tune-o-matic ABR-1, a wrap-tail bridge, and/or a Vibrola tremolo – all available in the time it takes to change strings. The solid mahogany body is also slightly thicker than a normal SG, which Brian says “offers more low and mid-range punch to the overall tone of the guitar up and down the neck.”
The finishing touches include sleek, pearlescent White Fox paint, a custom trapezoid inlay pattern and an ebony block tailpiece as seen on some original 1962 SG models. It’s easily the most versatile and distinctive SG Junior ever created, and for Brian it’s also reliable and just plain cool."
