This Fender Precision Bass in Sunburst finish dates to 1966 and has an interesting, documented history. Its previous owner, Chris Campbell of Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band since 1969, used this bass on the 1996 tour for the late-October 1995 'It's a Mystery' album, and possibly on the album itself. The case is original and contains a signed photo from that tour with a rear copyright mark for 1996, and a letter attesting to its authenticity.
This 1966 Fender Precision Bass is in very good, clean condition and appears largely original apart from a very good, professionally executed re-fret; given the instrument's history of real professional level use, fret wear is expected and natural. The neck date stamp reads 5 OCT 66C. The body is Alder, the neck Maple with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard. The bridge and pickup covers are in place. There is light 'buckle rash' to the back finish and a few small chips and dents scattered around the bass. It's been well cared for over the years.
The Fender Precision Bass launched in 1951 as Leo Fender's second major guitar design, and arguably was the tool that changed how popular music is performed. While there were a very few attempts at electric basses before, none were widely produced or supported. The Precision Bass, on the other hand, was immediately accepted and allowed better tuning and intonation (hence the name 'Precision') compared to previous un-fretted basses. Its design was extremely compact, durable and reliable compared to acoustic upright basses, and those are all very positive aspects for any touring performer. Over time, the Precision Bass has become the most-recorded instrument in history. Its first major alteration came in 1954 when it received the same body contours as the brand-new Stratocaster, and the next was in 1957 when the single-coil pickup was replaced with the split, hum-cancelling unit used every since. Fender, Gibson and Gretsch all released hum-cancelling pickups in 1957. Finally, in 1959 Fender began offering a Rosewood fingerboard, and since then changes to the Precision Bass design have been minor.
