The Fender John Mayer Special Edition BLACK1 Stratocaster was on offer in 2010 and 2011, with a total of 500 guitars built. It pairs an Alder body with a Rosewood-fingerboard, 9.5 inch radius Maple neck, gold hardware and 'Big Dipper' single coil pickups. That pickup set is based on the Texas Specials used in Mayer's 1990s Stevie Ray Vaughan Signature Stratocaster, underwound and with scooped mids. As on Mayer's original guitar, the backplate trem spring cover is neither installed or included.
This example dates to September 2010 at Corona, California and is in very good, clean condition with only very light wear. The finish is in great shape with a few small marks around the body, while fret wear is vanishingly light. It plays well, and the slightly thicker 'C' shape neck profile is very comfortable.
The included case is a Custom John Mayer/Fender/Incase® Collaboration Gig Bag, a rigid foam case with backpack straps
Here's what the builder says about the John Mayer Special Edition BLACK1 Stratocaster:
"John Mayer's black Stratocaster guitar has been his go-to instrument for years. He has relied on it for countless recording sessions and performances, and he affectionately calls it the "BLACK1." In collaboration with John, Fender is now offering a collectible, 500-piece special edition of this guitar worldwide.
John implores everyone to "make their own trouble on it" and, through their own musical experiences, to give it the same kind of extreme wear and battle scars that his personal guitar bears."
