The Fender Competition Mustang was built from 1969 to 1973, though the Mustang itself appeared as a student model in 1964 replacing both the MusicMaster and Duo-Sonic. The Competition Mustang was the same Mustang guitar with 'Racing Stripes' to link with Hot-Rod culture in the USA at the time. As a big step up from its predecessors, the Mustang included a stock Vibrato tailpiece. Because of its origins as a 'student' model, two scale lengths were offered - a longer 24 inch scale and a 22.5 inch scale.
This 24-inch scale Fender Competition Mustang dates to 1972 and was built at the Fullerton plant under CBS ownership. This example uses the original body and neck with a faux-tortoise pickguard in place of its stock white-black-white part, and replaced slider switches (the originals are in the case, replaced due to wear). The rest of the electronics are from a pre-1972 model.
The frets are in good condition and the guitar plays well; as a Fender design, action adjustments are a simple matter.
As a 'Competition' model, the finish is metallic red with white (now yellowed) stripes crossing the lower bass bout. The finish is a catalyzed polyester. Fender adopted catalyzed polyurethane in the mid 1960's because of its increased durability compared to nitrocellulose lacquer, and in the early 1970's to a catalyzed polyester. The increased durability made customers, retailers and the Fender / CBS company happy, as there were fewer warranty returns.
Still, as can be seen on this guitar, the poly finishes used were and are susceptible to checking just like nitrocellulose lacquers, and for the same reasons: rapid and significant changes in temperature and humidity cause the woods and finish to expand and contract at different rates.
Following Fender's proven formula, the Fender Competition Mustang used a Poplar or Alder body paired with a Maple neck bearing, with a brief exception, a Rosewood fingerboard. As Fender 'officially' ceased use of Brazilian Rosewood in 1966 with a few exceptions as stocks were used up, all of the Competition models used Indian Rosewood. From 1976 to 1978, Fender offered an optional all-Maple neck with integrated fingerboard, just like the Telecaster and Stratocaster models. The tuners have creme plastic buttons and F-Stamped cases, built by Schaller. The integrated Dynamic Vibrato was unique to this model, though it later appeared on the Kurt Cobain designed Fender Jag-Stang.
This lovely guitar is sold with a recent and very good condition black rectangular Fender style hard shell case by TKL. The case contains a strap and the original slider switches.
