Built in Corona, California, the Fender 1963 Telecaster NOS in Candy Red is a reproduction of one of the classic American workhorse guitars, after it gained a rosewood fingerboard. This is a very nice guitar with great looks, weight and playability.
The NOS designation means New Old Stock, and refers to the finish – as if you’d gone back in time, bought the guitar, and brought it back without it aging in any way. Finishes do degrade over time, and the ‘Closet Classic’ versions show only natural finish breakdown and oxidization, not 'relic' style wear.
This Fender Custom Shop example dates to 2008 and reproduces, for the most part, the 1963 Telecaster with rosewood fingerboard and custom Candy Apple Red finish. The frets are larger than would have been the used in 1963 and suit modern player’s tastes and the reality of fret wear.
On this Fender 1963 Telecaster NOS, the frets have very light wear, and the guitar plays well and cleanly. At this point in time, neck profiles started to become less bulky and more C-shaped compared to 1950’s models, and to my taste are the most comfortable Fender built.
The body is Alder with the lovely Candy Red finish, the neck Maple with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard. All up this guitar is a very comfortable 7.17 pounds (3.26kg). The pickguard has a slight 'mint green' tint, common to Fender pickguards of the era.
The finish is in very good, clean condition with no appreciable wear, though there is a small chip on the rear edge near the tail strap pin.
The excellent original black rectangular hard shell case by G&G is included, and contains the original strap, Certificate of Authenticity, and 'ashtray' bridge cover.
