The Eastman MD305 A-Style mandolin in classic finish, is an excellent semi-pro A-Style mandolin, hand built using high quality solid woods and delivering classic tones. The F-holes of this style help increase top end and 'bite', making the instrument ideal for bluegrass rhythm and lead. Round or oval-hole models have a somewhat rounder, fuller tone perhaps better for Celtic and other melodic styles.
Dating to October 11, 2013 at Beijing, this Eastman MD305 has bookmatched top and back, of carved Spruce and Maple, with Maple necks and Ebony for the fingerboard, truss rod cover and bridge. The body blocks and linings are Mahogany. The head plate is a black material. The position markers are Mother of Pearl. Eastman ships these models with a cast aluminum tailpiece, but on this example that part has been replaced with a standard Gibson-style stamped part with plain cover. The finish is a 'Classic' brown stain with clear satin over top.
Overall this 2013 Eastman MD305 is in good physical and playing condition, with a few wear marks around the edges and very light fret wear.
Sold with a backpack-style gig back containing the original, dated Certificate of Authenticity.
Like other A-Style mandolins, the Eastman MD305 uses a 'teardrop' shaped body design, one of several inventions and innovations by Orville Gibson during the 1890's, primarily adapting traditional violin family construction methods to other instruments including guitars (including the archtop guitar) and European bowl-back mandolins. These inventions and innovations have been about as influential on instrument design and construction as anything in the preceding centuries.
