Tasteful and understated, this Dean USA V in a 'Blue Burst' nitro finish was built in Chicago, Illinois during 1981.
This Dean USA V features Mahogany for the body and neck with Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard, Grover Roto-Matic tuners, diMarzio Super Distortion pickups, and a Tune-a-Matic bridge. Like early Gibson V models, the strings load from the back and pass through a V-shaped brass plate on the front. Controls include individual volumes and master tone control.
This eye-catching guitar has been used as intended and has expected finish wear. It was very recently set up at The Twelfth Fret repair shop and is in very good playing condition, with light fret wear. The binding and pickup trim rings are quite yellowed, and the Blue Burst finish has faded to a pronounced greenish tint, both an indication of its age.
The original rectangular hard shell case is included.
Dean Zelinsky started Dean Guitars in 1977 in Evanston, Illinois and by 1980 demand had risen enough to require a move to Chicago. To deal with ever-increasing orders and to keep costs and prices down, much of the production was moved to higher-end Japanese builders like ESP. By 1986, US production ended and all models were built in Korea. At this point, Dean had shipped between seven and eight thousand guitars. In 1990, Zelinsky sold the 'Dean' name to Oscar Medros of Tropical Music in Miami, and US production resumed in Plant City, Florida. briefly in California during 1993-1994 In 1995, the name was sold again to Armadillo Enterprises in Clearwater FL, and production moved there until 2005, when it moved again to its current home in Tampa.
In 2000, Dean Zelinsky rejoined Dean Guitars for a term that lasted until summer of 2008, and now runs Dean Zelinsky Guitars in Highland Park, Illinois.
In 2019, Gibson filed suit against Dean (Armadillo Enterprises), alleging that the V, Explorer and SG based body shapes infringed Gibson's copyrights. In 2022, Gibson won the first round, won again for a separate suit in 2023, and in early 2025 appeals were exhausted in Gibson's favour.
