The Collings D2H Dreadnought Natural is one of the best expressions available of the classic 14-fret Spruce and Rosewood Dreadnought design, built to exacting standards with care for build, finish quality, playability and especially tone. These are simply some of the best sounding dreadnoughts made anywhere.
Here we have a Collings D2H Dreadnought in standard kit, built during 2012 at the Collings shop in Austin, Texas. The top is high grade Sitka Spruce featuring pre-war scalloped X-bracing, paired with Indian Rosewood for the sides and back. The headplate is stained Ebony and carries the Collings logo in Mother of Pearl. The neck and body blocks are Mahogany, and the fingerboard and bridge are Ebony. The pickguard is a faux-tortoise applied to the finish (not to the bare wood surface, as was done traditionally; that led to a characteristic top crack). The nut and saddle are bone. The tuners are nickel plated 16:1 Waverly models, made in Bozeman, Montana.
This example is in very clean condition, plays very well and has a spectacular tone. Given the light level of wear, it's fair to suggest that its tone will develop further with playing. Fret and finish wear are light. Two cracks developed, one to the top, past the bridge below the low E and A strings, and one to the back seam, and were professionally glued and the top cleated. It took me a bit of examination to find them from the outside.
The original Collings hard shell case is included.
Here's what Collings says about the D2H:
"The square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought is the most popular steel-string acoustic guitar body shape in the world. While Collings is certainly not the only company to build them, we bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar.
Although its bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, Collings versions are also often employed by bluegrass flatpickers who must compete with inherently louder instruments such as banjos and fiddles. The wide range of woods and neck sizes offered allow dreadnought fans to find a Collings model ideally suited to their playing style and tonal preference."
