The Collings D2H Acoustic Guitar Natural is one of the best available interpretations of this classic body design. In terms of fit and finish quality, attention to detail, playability and tone, these are about as good as it gets.
Built in Austin, Texas during 2012, this Collings D2H Natural is in very good, clean condition with light, actual play wear and a couple of small pressure marks on the top near the tail block. There is very light wear to the back's nitrocellulose lacquer finish from the player's clothing, and fret wear is light.
Collings uses a Sitka Spruce top for the D2H, in this case braced with Adirondack Spruce, paired with Indian Rosewood for the back and sides ; the body blocks, linings and neck are Honduran Mahogany, with Ebony for the head plate, bridge and unbound fingerboard. The Collings logo and position markers are Mother of Pearl. The nut and saddle are Bone, and the tuners are Waverly open gear models. A 'teardrop' shape faux-tortoise pickguard is applied to the finish on the treble side of the soundhole. There are no electronics, this is strictly an acoustic guitar.
The original Collings branded TKL-built hard shell case is included.
The 'H' in the model name refers to the Herringbone purfling layer around the top, as used on Martin guitars until the middle of WW2. Their Herringbone purfling had been sourced from Germany prior to the war and could not be restocked; for decades after, Martin then used black/white/black purfling instead.
Originally introduced around 1916 by Martin for the Oliver Ditson company, the D-body reappeared in 1931 as a 12-fret model. In 1934, a 14-fret neck was added and this has become perhaps the most copied guitar style due to its power and full tone.
