The Clifford Essex XX Special Concert Grande 5 string banjo is one of the most prestigious and luxurious banjos ever made by the Clifford Essex Company. Introduced as a flagship model, it was designed to meet the highest professional standards for tone, projection, and elegance.
Clifford Essex was a pioneering English banjoist and luthier who played a crucial role in popularizing the banjo, mandolin, and guitar in the UK during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1900, after a brief partnership with Alfred D. Cammeyer, Essex founded Clifford Essex & Co., based in London. The company quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality fretted instruments, particularly banjos, which became popular among classical and professional performers.
The Concert Grande stood out not just for its sound, but also for its craftsmanship. It offered a level of detail and finish that made it both a concert instrument and a collector's piece. Today, original XX Specials are rare and highly sought-after by vintage banjo enthusiasts and players of historical repertoire.
