This nice example Bacon And Day Senorita 5-string banjo dates to 1956 at the Gretsch plant in Brooklyn, New York; as noted below Gretsch purchased the Bacon and Day remnants in 1940.
The Bacon & Day Senorita line was built from 1929 to 1969 in both Tenor and 5-String versions, and other forms like the Banjolin. With distinctive use of pearloid sheets for the head plate, heel plate, fingerboard, resonator and pot, the Bacon and Day Senorita was an affordable entry to mid-range model targeted to students and amateur players.
This example is largely original though the original planetary tuners were long ago replaced with a set of friction pegs. Construction is largely Maple for the neck and laminated Maple for the pot; it's likely that under the pearloid fingerboard overlay, the underlying fingerboard is Maple. The resonator back is Maple laminate, covered with pearloid. The neck pearloid is white, while the material applied to the pot and resonator back has been given a 'sunburst' shading effect.
Overall this Bacon And Day Senorita 5-String banjo is in good physical and playing condition.
Sold with a relatively recent Profile brand hard shell case.
Bacon And Day was a highly respected banjo builder until the devastating hurricane on the 21st of September 1938. Along with widespread damage and around 680 deaths, the storm destroyed their factory in Groton, Connecticut. In 1940, the Fred Gretsch Company purchased the remains of the company and moved production of a few models including the Senorita to their own plant in Brooklyn NY.
