Shown here is a very good condition Alhambra 10FP Flamenco Negra guitar, built during 2013 in Muro de Alcoy, Spain. The 'FP' in the model designation indicates that it is Flamenco Palisandro with Indian Rosewood back and sides, distinct from a 10FC model with Cypress back and sides. The Alhambra 10FP Flamenco guitar was the top level Alhambra Flamenco Negra model outside of signature instruments. This model was introduced in 2003 discontinued in 2016, and superceded by the Signature 10FP Pinana.
Materials and Construction
Built using superior grade solid German Spruce top and solid Palisandro or Indian Rosewood back, sides, headplate and bridge, with a Spanish Cedar (Cedrela odorata) neck and ebony fingerboard, the Alhambra 10fp produces a somewhat warmer tone than Flamenco Blanca models, with the low action characteristic of flamenco guitars.
These professional quality instruments are constructed in the traditional Spanish style, with the sides integrated into the heel.
As a Flamenco guitar, a pair of clear 'golpeador' or tap plates are added to protect the top from percussive tapping, an essential technique.
High quality Alhambra branded gold-coloured tuners with ebony buttons are installed. There are no electronics.
More information about Flamenco Guitars
Flamenco guitars are built for both a melodic and rhythmic purpose. Rather than quiet, introspective performance, Flamenco instruments need to keep up with and cut through the sound produced by singers, dancers, percussionists, and handclaps. These guitars are built to be bright and loud, yet with low action that provides a degree of natural string rattling. Golpeadores, or thin tap plates, are often installed on both sides of the strings to protect the top from percussive effects like rasgueados and golpe.
Traditionally, light woods like Cypress have been used for the back and sides on Flamenco Blanca models. More recently, Rosewood has been used for a warmer sound and use beyond a strictly flamenco context, and these are known as Flamenco Negra guitars. In either version, the geometry is the same - light construction and low action, to produce a lively, vibrant, responsive and loud guitar.
