Here we're looking at a Ramirez Estudio classical guitar with a Red Cedar top, label dated to 1969 at Madrid, Spain. This guitar is in good clean and original condition with only light finish wear.
Built to a standard design in traditional Spanish construction where the sides slot into the heel block,
this 1969 Ramirez Estudio Classical pairs a Spruce-braced Red Cedar top with Indian Rosewood for the sides, back, head plate and bridge. Cedro (Spanish Cedar, which is neither Spanish or Cedar) is used for the neck and heel blocks, body blocks, linings and back braces. The fingerboard is Ebony. The bridge has been converted to 12-hole format which allows for greater downbearing on the saddle, and a more secure knot less prone to string slippage. The gold plated tuners are original and work well. The guitar has been recently set up and plays well. The rear edge of the bridge appears to have been reglued some time ago, and also appears stable.
A black hard shell case is included, which from its appearance may be 'original' or at least contemporary with the guitar. Structurally the case seems solid but its covering is peeling in some areas. In some countries and eras, cases are sold separately, not by the builder. As a comparison, in Canada during the 1960's guitar cases were classed as luggage for import tax purposes. Consequently many US made guitars sold in Canada, particularly by Fender and Gibson, arrived without cases. The distributor arranged for locally built cases and supplied them with the guitars. Those cases were then 'original' but not from the factory.
Ramirez has long offered not only highest quality, hand built professional classical and flamenco guitars, but also student level instruments.
In her history of Ramirez Estudio Classical guitars, Amalia Ramirez writes:
"...if studio guitars did not exist, there would be no guitarists or, if there were, they would be very few, because who would spend the large sum of money to buy a handmade guitar if they are still starting to walk this path that is not always followed, and even less to become a professional guitarist."
From early days, all Ramirez Estudio classical guitars have been inspected and set up in the Ramirez shops in Madrid. This ensures that the instrument is of acceptable quality to receive the Ramirez name and label.
