The Martin 0-18 has been in production since about 1898 - though the 'Style 18' appeared in 1857 - and is the company's smallest standard body size. As an '0-18', it features a 'Concert' or '0' sized body using a Spruce top and Mahogany for the back, sides and neck, a 24.9 inch scale length, and Rosewood for the fingerboard, bridge and head plate. As a 1955 model, the Rosewood was sourced from Brazil.
While it has a compact body size, the Martin 0-18 is a bit bigger than 'Parlor' guitars, and still develops enough volume for performance use. It naturally lacks the heavier bass response of a dreadnought, but delivers a warm, well-balanced tone. This example has had a neck reset, eventually a necessity for almost any steel string guitar over time, and this allows for a comfortable action. The tuners have been replaced with appropriate open-gear models. There's lots of natural finish checking and some indication of overspray on the top and back. The top has some wear areas from vigorous strumming. The pickguard is a newer replacement original, and appears glued to the finish rather than directly to the top.
This guitar looks and sounds the part!
Rather than an adjustable truss rod, since the 1930's Martin had been using a T-shaped metal insert, replaced by a square channel in the 1960's, and ultimately in 1985 an adjustable rod. However, there were some periods when an Ebony stiffener was used, notably following a Steel industry strike ending in July 1952 that affected Martin's supply during 1953. Materiel shortages during WW2 also led to the use of ebony stiffeners.
Sold with a newer Martin hardshell case.
