This well-made Lado Solo 2 Bass guitar was built between 1981 and 1986 in either Scarborough, the eastern edge of Toronto, or Uxbridge, and shows many influences of the era. It is in overall very good, clean and largely original condition.
Fret wear is light, the natural finish is in good shape with honest but light play wear. The original bridge has been replaced with a Schaller model in black finish on riser plates. The tuners are Schaller M4S models. The bass is built largely using Maple with Walnut sections, and Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard and head plate.
In the late 1970’s the through-neck design really took off for companies like Lado and B.C Rich. Many top level players used these guitar designs as an alternative to the standard Gibson and Fender models; they offered new looks and vastly more tonal possibilities.
Merging the classic 34 inch scale P-Bass specs with neck-through designs being made popular by other builders like Bernardo Rico – B C Rich – the Lado Solo-2 bass features hard maple construction with walnut for the lamination between the neck/body core and body ‘wings’. Both of these woods are common in the local area, Maple being the Canadian national tree and its leaf making an appearance on the national flag. Indian Rosewood is used for the fingerboard and head plate.
The Lado Solo 2 bass electronics are simple, consisting of a diMarzio Model P pickup running through basic passive volume and tone controls, and with a toggle switch for serial / parallel operation. The hardware includes Grover bass tuners, Badass (now Badass 1) bridge then by Leo Quan. In 2019, Allparts purchased that company.
A hard shell case from the period, possibly custom, is included.
Around 1981, Lado moved from Scarborough (near Warden south of St. Clair) about 72km north to a larger facility in Uxbridge, and then back to Scarborough for even more space as demand increased. Joe Kovacic provided the production period, 1981 - 1986. The serial numbers are sequential but model-specific, and so are of limited help in precise dating.
