This Guild Starfire III Electric Guitar in Cherry Finish, 1966 complete with a stock Bigsby, is a stunning guitar from the estate of Toronto musician and songwriter David Baxter — one of the instruments he used frequently.
With a light weight of 6 pounds (2.74kg) this is a very comfortable and responsive guitar to play. It is in good working order, plays cleanly and sounds great. This style of guitar is almost ideal for songwriters, the thin hollow body being both comfortable and loud enough to use unamplified. It's part of the reason that members of The Beatles favored the Epiphone Casino.
As with David Baxter's other instruments, this guitar has had a long and eventful life, and was definitely used as intended through countless gigs, rehearsals and recording sessions.
Guild introduced the Starfire III in 1960 as a two-pickup, Guild-branded Bigsby equipped version of the Starfire II, itself a two-pickup version of the single cutaway, thin hollow archtop body Starfire I.
This example dates to 1966 and was built in Hoboken, NJ, a year prior to Guild's relocation to Westerly, Rhode Island.
Over the years, a few changes were made to this guitar. The original Guild humbuckers pickups were replaced with Gibson models, bearing patent number 2737842.The tuners were removed and Schaller M6 models added. The Bigsby tailpiece and bridge are original.
Like most electric archtops since late 1930's, the body is constructed of laminates to reduce feedback. Guild used both Maple and Mahogany laminates and this is Mahogany, which 'darkens' the tone a bit. The neck is Mahogany, and the bound fingerboard is Brazilian Rosewood.
Sold with a simple gig bag.
