This Guild Starfire II electric guitar black, 1966 complete with a stock Bigsby, is an exceptional guitar from the estate of Toronto musician and songwriter David Baxter — one of the instruments he used frequently.
With a light weight of 6 pounds (2.74kg) this is a very comfortable and responsive guitar to play.
Guild introduced the Starfire II in 1960 as a two-pickup version of the single cutaway, thin but fully hollow archtop body Starfire I. As with most electric archtops, the body is constructed of laminates to reduce feedback. Guild used Maple and Mahogany laminates and this example is Mahogany, which 'darkens' the tone a bit. The neck is Mahogany, and the bound fingerboard is Brazilian Rosewood.
This example dates to 1967 as one of the last guitars built in Hoboken, NJ prior to Guild's relocation to Westerly, Rhode Island.
This guitar has had a long and eventful life, and was definitely used as intended through countless gigs, rehearsals and recording sessions. Its new owner will likely wish to consider renewing the frets.
The finish was originally Sunburst, and there are traces of the red layers visible inside and on the edges of the F-holes. At some point it was refinished as overspray in Black. This was likely done following a neck / headstock repair, and the guitar was used for many years after. Probably at the same time, the bridge was changed from a traditional 'floating' piece on a Rosewood base, to a post-mounted tune-o-matic style part, now a Schaller roller bridge. The original tuners are long gone and were replaced with open-gear models. The classic Guild 'G' harp tailpiece, pickups and control knobs are original; the wiring has been worked on but the pots may be original.
Sold with a period Guild hard shell case, likely the original.
