Here we are looking at a second-year Gibson Les Paul Junior DC Cherry electric guitar in largely original condition. Built during 1959 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, this fine Gibson Les Paul Junior DC Cherry is in good general condition and great playing condition.
The Gibson Les Paul Junior DC Cherry – Double Cutaway – appeared in 1958 as a modification of the 1954 single-cutaway version. The next modification came partway through 1961 with a complete redesign of the body as Gibson shifted to what’s now known as the SG. This is a straight-ahead, single pickup, double cutaway design offering unrestricted access to all the frets.
It is built of two woods: Central American Mahogany for the body and neck, and Brazilian Rosewood for the fingerboard. Typical of the time, the neck has a fuller profile, but is not overly large.
The bridge, single layer faux-tortoise pickup and most of the electronics including the 'bumblebee' cap seem original; the jack plate, which very often breaks, has been replaced and in the process the wiring was extended for practical reasons. The 'dual line' Kluson strip tuners with creme plastic buttons are from a 1964 model.
The original cherry-tint nitrocellulose lacquer finish has faded over time as expected, and shows an amount of natural checking and some honest play wear from real use. It is worn through on the lower back edges, and the back of the neck has common wear and mild denting patterns. This guitar has been used as intended! The frets seem original and both frets and fingerboard show moderate play wear, but it still plays cleanly.
The P-90 pickup on this Gibson Les Paul Junior DC Cherry has a fantastic sound, and physically it balances nicely. Acoustically, the guitar is very resonant, which is always a great tonal starting point.
A beige rectangular hard shell 'Distributor' case is included. The term 'Distributor' references national import duties; to protect luggage companies, governments of the day imposed significant tariffs on items like guitar cases. To reduce the financial impact, US manufacturers shipped guitars in cartons, and distributors sourced cases from local luggage makers. Though a 'Distributor' case is likely not what the guitar manufacturer would have shipped in their home country, very frequently it was what the guitar was originally purchased with.
