Here is a Gibson J-50 from 1967 with a natural finish.
The Gibson J-50 is closely related to the renowned Gibson J-45, with the main differences being the choice of top wood and finish. The J-50 features a natural finish, while the J-45 is known for its sunburst. Both models were introduced in 1942, with the J-50 requiring higher-quality spruce for its natural top, whereas the J-45’s sunburst finish helped mask visual imperfections in the grain. These imperfections did not affect the tone however. Due to material shortages during World War II, the J-50 was briefly discontinued while the J-45 remained in production. The J-50's production resumed in 1945 and continued until 1981.
The J-50 originally sports a round or slope-shouldered dreadnought design, setting it apart from the Martin square-shoulder models. However, in 1968, Gibson adapted to market demands by changing the body shape of both the J-50 and J-45 to square shoulders.
This particular slope-shoulder J-50 was made in 1967 and includes the classic adjustable bridge with a rosewood saddle. The bridge is currently set as low as possible with the action a little on the higher side (8/64ths). It is in good playing condition and delivers the distinctive Gibson sound known for complementing vocals and recording well. The guitar shows signs of use with several dings and marks and has had two top cracks repaired. As a mid-60s model, the neck is relatively narrow compared to modern Gibson fingerboards.
