The Gibson J-200 Artist was produced in Kalamazoo, Michigan during the latter part of the 1970’s into the early 1980’s. Essentially a continuation of the ‘standard’ level SJ-200 introduced in 1938, this variant carried a number of Norlin-era characteristics such as a headstock volute and a less elaborate bridge.
This Gibson J-200 Artist dates to 1980 at the historic Gibson Parsons Street plant in Kalamazoo. It is in great playing condition, having had a number of service items necessary for almost any guitar of a certain age, particularly a neck reset and refret. Some time ago, a section of binding on the bass side of the fingerboard, between the 11th and 12th frets was replaced. The finish is in overall good shape, with expected wear. The Ebony bridge is not itself original but does follow the design of the Norlin era, without the extra inlays. Earlier and later J-200 models used a distinctive ‘Moustache’ bridge, with and without cut-out ends.
For its construction, the Gibson J-200 Artist pairs a Sitka Spruce top with figured Maple for the sides, back and neck. The body blocks and linings are Mahogany. The neck itself is made of three pieces for stability – five counting the bound headstock ‘wings’. It carries a bound Indian Rosewood fingerboard with 25.4 inch scale classic ‘Crown’ inlays. And of course, the pickguard is the classic hand-painted model specific to the J-200. The tuners are original gold plated Gibson-branded models likely built by Schaller.
The original hard shell case is included.
