The Fender Jaco Pastorius Tribute Fretless Jazz Bass, officially introduced in 1999 and now out of production, recreates the instrument used by one of the most influential bassists on countless performances and recordings.
This bass is in very good, clean condition with very little play wear. Strung with flatwounds, the fingerboards' epoxy finish is in great condition.
The original G&G built, black rectangular hard shell case with blue interior is included. The case is in very good condition and contains the COA booklet, and an Oasis humidifier.
The Pastorius Tribute finish and hardware has received a 'relic' treatment to match the look of the original. The body is Alder, the neck Maple with Indian Rosewood fingerboard. As was very common at the time - our shop did many conversions - the Fretless state was originally obtained by simply removing the stock frets, inlaying veneer into the fret slots, and finishing the board. The Tribute model uses Custom '60s Single-Coil Jazz Bass pickups.
Both the serial number and COA date this instrument to November 6th 2018. With the model's official introduction in 1999, this must be a very early example. This production date and the Custom Shop logo being impressed on the back of the head - rather than being a decal - suggest the involvement of Vince Cunetto. Cunetto was hired during 1995 by John Page and JW Black at Fender to distress components and create period-correct decals before the Custom Shop was launched. Cunetto worked on hundreds of instruments before the association with Fender ended in 1999.
Fender also offered and recently discontinued a non-relic version, the Jaco Pastorius Jazz Bass. Aside from the visual differences, the non-Tribute version uses American Vintage Jazz Bass pickups rather than the Custom '60s Single-Coil Jazz Bass pickups, and a Pau Ferro fingerboard rather than Indian Rosewood.
This is how the builder described the Fender Jaco Pastorius Tribute Fretless Jazz Bass:
"The Jaco Pastorius Tribute Jazz Bass® is a faithful re creation of the bass master's famously distressed sunburst-finish fretless Jazz Bass, and is a result of meticulous research done in cooperation with his technician. Features include a select alder body, specially shaped maple neck, epoxy-coated fretless rosewood fingerboard and knurled chrome Precision Bass® control knobs."
