Shown here is an Eastman MD514, a high quality F-style oval hole mandolin with 'Classic' gloss finish based on Orville Gibson's ground-breaking designs introduced before 1900. The now-common F-hole first appeared in the 1920's as Lloyd Loar designs. Tonally, the Oval hole has a somewhat warmer, rounder sound compared to the bluegrass 'chop' attack of an F-hole model. These are well suited to Celtic styles.
The Eastman MD514 is built with a carved Sitka Spruce top, then Maple for the the sides, carved back, and neck. The head plate, fingerboard and bridge are Ebony. The body blocks and linings are Mahogany. The tuners are Pingwell models, and the tailpiece is an Eastman cast aluminum design. The finish is a gloss nitrocellulose lacquer over a 'Classic' stain.
This example likely dates to 2011 and is in good, clean condition with some play wear. The treble side of the top has light finish wear between the soundhole and bridge, and the back has a few pressure marks from playing. Fretwear is light to moderate.
The original rigid case is included.
Eastman says this about the oval soundhole found on the MD514:
“Oval-hole mandolins possess throaty and vocal tonal characteristics that are wonderfully compatible with mandolin orchestras, and Celtic/folk music. These mandolins also produce a perceived ambient reverb, due to the oval-hole opening lying directly below the courses of strings.”
Eastman also offered an F-hole version as the MD515.
