Built in Burlington Vermont, the Iris Mark Stutman Spec MS-00 draws from 1930's Gibson L-00 models with meticulous construction and modern upgrades, including a hybrid bolted tenon neck joint. This is an 'upgraded' version of Iris's 'Standard' MS-00, and the MS refers to Mark Stutman, founder of Folkway Music who consulted on design and construction.
This is a beautiful guitar in very good, clean condition with vanishingly light wear. It plays very well and is wonderful for fingerstyle playing.
Like the originals, the Iris Mark Stutman Spec MS-00 features Red Spruce (also often known as Adirondack) for the top and bracing. The sides, back, body blocks, solid (as opposed to kerfed) linings, and neck are Central American Mahogany. Unlike the originals, the fingerboard and bridge are Indian Rosewood in place of Brazilian Rosewood. The construction is extremely clean and precise; in contrast, originals often had very visible saw marks on the bracing. The finish is a thin and very dark burst, like many pre-war Gibson models; darker finishes like this were often used to hide visual 'defects' in the wood. Again, like many vintage pieces, the headstock logo is stencil printed rather than inlaid. The pickguard uses a 'firestripe' plastic, like early Gibsons with Italian Celluloid pieces.
Sold with its original very good condition black flat-top hard-shell case by TKL, containing the original warranty card.
Red Spruce (Picea rubens) grows in Eastern North America, from the Maritime provinces, Quebec and eastern Ontario, down into the Adirondack and Appalachian Mountain ranges. It is somewhat stronger and stiffer than many other Spruce varieties and was commonly used for soundboards by North American instrument builders until about 1941 when the USA entered World War 2. Its strength made it desirable for aircraft construction and by the end of the war there were virtually no stocks suitable for musical instruments left. These have now regrown and over the last decade has begun appearing on higher end instruments, but the more common Spruce comes from Western North America - the Sitka and Engelmann varieties.
