Now out of production, the Collings D-42A sat at the top of Collings' 'Traditional' line. It generally featured an Adirondack Spruce top with forward-shifted X bracing, with Indian Rosewood (sometimes Brazilian Rosewood on special order) for the sides, back and head plate. The body blocks and neck are Mahogany, with Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard. It carries the distinctive 'Martin Style 42' torch inlay and abalone purfling set, which Martin discontinued in 1943. With this purfling set, the Abalone runs inside the top binding and around the fingerboard tag. The tuners are gold-plated Waverly models. An L R Baggs Anthem pickup and preamp set have been installed to an endpin jack, with the battery pack mounted on the neck block below the serial number.
Combining classic D body construction and '42' style trim, this 2007 Collings D-42A dreadnought pairs Adirondack Spruce with Indian Rosewood. This sonic cannon delivers much more than good looks and top quality construction.
This Collings D-42A is a spectacular instrument. The materials are top shelf, the fit and construction are extremely good, and the gloss finish is very clean. Its sound is warm, rich and full with lots of projection. It has been played but well taken care of, showing light wear to the finish in a few spots and has light fret wear.
The original arched top Collings hard shell case is included.
Some years ago, Collings discontinued a number of models to focus on their own distinctive branding. This 2007 Collings D42 is an example of the guitars from that era and is pretty much the best you can get anywhere as a ‘production’ model. While Collings does not now offer this model with these features or rare materials, they tell us that a hypothetical new replacement would be in the $22,500USD range.
