This Gibson Les Paul Custom Cherry Burst electric guitar was built during 1973, not long before Gibson obtained property for their new plant in Nashville. Production in Nashville didn't start until June of 1975, but full scale construction of the Les Paul line didn't move until 1984 when the Kalamazoo plant was closed and in 1985 sold to Heritage.
Dating to 1973 at Kalamazoo Michigan, this Gibson Les Paul Custom has features common to the 1969-1986 Norlin era. These include a headstock volute, reduced headstock pitch of 14 degrees (down from 17) to improve strength, and a 'Pancake' body as used from 1969 to 1976.
As with standard post-1968 Les Paul Custom construction, this guitar has a Maple cap on a Mahogany back. The neck is three-piece Mahogany with a bound Ebony fingerboard and Mother of Pearl block position markers. The bridge pickup has been replaced with a Seymour Duncan model, the covers of both pickups removed, and the original Gibson Deluxe tuners with a set of gold-plated, locking Sperzel models. The locking feature of the tuners does not affect tuning stability, but absolutely makes string changes faster! The pickguard has also been replaced with a 'Standard' style,
This Gibson Les Paul Custom Cherryburst has been used as intended over the years and is in good condition with expected wear to the finish and frets. The body finish has a few small dents and dings, mostly around the edges and strap buttons, and the neck finish is worn in play areas. The frets are fairly low though not to the level of the 'Fretless Wonder' treatment. It plays well and is currently strung with a 9-42 set at a fairly low action height.
A later, brown Gibson-logo Les Paul case is included and contains the strap portion of the Schaller strap locks.
When introduced in 1954 and until the 1960 model year - when the original Les Paul design was replaced by what we now know as the SG - the Les Paul Custom generally had an all-Mahogany body, with no Maple cap. When the original design was re-launched in 1968, the bodies for the Custom, Deluxe and Standards all had Maple caps.
