It is from the Bill Lawrence period, and as such has 'Tarback' Super Humbuckers. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe nitrocellulose lacquer Tobacco Sunburst on this guitar is unusual or rare, as most SG Standards received a cherry red or walnut brown finish.  The finish is in overall good condition, with natural shrinkage - this guitar is now half a century old.  Part of this shrinkage extends to the body section joins, and there are lines on the front and back defining them. While these are visible and can be felt, they are completely solid.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe guitar plays well, the controls function as expected, and the neck is quite comfortable.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA period hard shell Japanese case in good condition is included. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eMaterials and Construction\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Gibson SG was built of at most three or four woods, exactly which combination depending on era and model.   Originally, both body and neck were Mahogany,  the fingerboard Rosewood, and the head plate black-dyed Holly.   In 1969, three-piece Mahogany necks with a volute were introduced to increase strength and twist resistance, and black fiberboard started to appear for head plates. From 1975 to 1981 most SG necks were three-piece Maple to reduce twisting and breakage.  However, consumers seemed to prefer traditional woods, so mahogany was re-introduced, and the volute was removed.   The trend of re-creating original specifications has continued to the present.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis 1976 SG Standard is from the Norlin era.  It pairs a three-piece Mahogany body with a three-piece Mahogany neck.  The neck has volute and a wider headstock, Mother of Pearl Gibson logo and crown or leaf logo.  The bound Rosewood fingerboard position markers are Mother of Pearl blocks.  The back of the headstock carries an oval decal providing the model name - SG Standard - followed by 'Made in USA' and then the serial number.   Portions of this decal are worn, particularly past the serial number '00' prefix, but the digits are visible from specific angles. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe fretwire is a period typical wide, low style with light to moderate wear.  The fingerboard itself has very light wear and no significant fingernail gouging. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHardware starts with a set of Schaller M6 tuners with metal keystone buttons. The bridge is also a Schaller product, the wide-travel tune-o-matic or 'harmonica' bridge, and this is followed by a standard stop tailpiece.  This specific guitar has perhaps the least corroded harmonica bridge I have seen in decades. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe electronics begin with a Bill Lawrence design, epoxy-potted Super Humbucker or 'Tarback' pickups.  This is followed by standard Gibson wiring, two volumes, two tones, pickup selector and output jack.  Opening the control cover plate, the cavity is completely clean and shows no signs of modifications, though there is a spot where one single conductor lead has melted insulation.
