gibson-es-125tc-sunburst-1966
Gibson ES-125TC Sunburst, 1966 [USED]

The Gibson ES-125TC made its debut in 1960 as a thinned down, cutaway version of the full body, non cutaway ES-125 that had been available since 1941. There was one available finish - sunburst - though its colour tone changed in 1960 from tobacco to cherry. The 'TC' stands for Thinline and (Florentine) Cutaway. This is a single-pickup model; if it had two pickups it would be 'TDC' with the D representing Double Pickup.

This Gibson ES-125TC dates to 1966 and is in very good largely original condition. There is a small, discreet and very well done modification to the bridge base.

Originally, these rosewood bases had a very thin center section connecting the two 'feet', bending to allow the feet to fully contact the top. This could be problematic over time, and here a skilled person added a rosewood layer to strengthen the base and allow the saddle to be raised higher.

The finish is in very good condition for a 60-year old instrument and fretwear varies between light and moderate.

The guitar plays well, with a fairly narrow 1.56 inch (40mm) nut width, typical of the period. It is presently strung with Thomastik Jazz-Swing 12-50 flatwounds and the P-90 needs no help to sound great and very full.

Sold with a modern black TKL hard shell steel string acoustic guitar case.

Materials and Construction

The Gibson ES-125TC used Gibson's typical hollowbody construction - laminate Maple back and laminate maple sides. The top and back were given their arched profiles via hydraulic presses and dies that provided steam, heat and pressure. The tops have two spruce braces running the length of the body, and mahogany linings, tail and neck blocks. The neck is mahogany with an unbound Rosewood fingerboard, which changed from Brazilian to Indian during 1966. For any given instrument, which one depended on what was pulled from the parts bins. In this case, these parts are a brownish Brazilian rosewood.

Hardware is simple - a set of strip-mounted Kluson Deluxe tuners with oval creme plastic buttons, a trapeze tailpiece, and a rosewood adjustable height bridge. The pickguard is a translucent faux tortoise and is in very good condition.

Electronics are as simple as it gets on a single-pickup guitar. There is a P-90 single coil pickup with black plastic 'Dog Ear' cover, volume and tone controls, and a side-mounted output jack.

<table width="100%" style="width: 100%;
