Here is a limited edition Fender John Jorgenson Hellecaster Black Sparkle signature electric guitar! Produced in Japan during 1997 and 1998, this model was part of a special series designed in collaboration with the members of the band The Hellecasters; Will Ray, Jerry Donahue, and John Jorgenson. The series was notable for its design features and limited production run. The exact number produced is unclear, but the estimate is less than 500. Production was extending into 1998 to meet dealer demand at the time.
This John Jorgenson Hellecaster boasts a striking 'Black Gold Sparkle' Stratocaster shaped maple body with a vintage tinted high-gloss maple neck. The fingerboard is rosewood with gold sparkle dot inlays, a gold 'Hellecasters' inlay at the 12th fret, and has 22 jumbo frets. The neck profile is a 60's C shape veering towards a D shape. The headstock is reversed and large in style, with a decal of John Jorgenson's signature. It has gold Schaller locking tuners and a Wilkinson self-lubricating nut. The body supports a gold custom two-pivot-point tremolo bridge.
Prior to working with Fender, Jorgenson had collaborated with G&L, and this is reflected in the pickup configuration of the Hellecaster. It utilizes 3 Seymour Duncan custom-voiced, split-coil, hum-cancelling pickups patterned after G&L’s 'Z Coils' with Alnico magnets. A five-way switch with an additional push/pull control offers seven distinct tonal variations. Gold knobs have been replaced with black, with the originals in the case. The middle knob is a bass cut. A gold sparkle pickguard offers a shimmering backdrop for the hardware and compliments the black sparkle body.
Note: Factory models had an extra resistor on the bottom tone control, affecting treble response. This was often rectified by removing the resistor. The bottom resistor is still in place on this guitar but does not appear to be causing an issue with the treble.
The Hellecaster is of interest to collectors and players alike, with its host of unique features. This particular example is in very good condition with some minor wear and tear within the normal limits for its age.
